6 Pointers For Working Moms Who Chose Breastfeeding

We most certainly want to breastfeed our child. Yes, we did. But, most working moms don’t know how to do so, especially those who are new to parenting. 

Not every woman has the luxury to stay at home, caring for their babies. Some have to work to pay their bills, rent and food. 

Even with a hectic work schedule, all working moms should find a way to supply their child with breastfeeding. 

The most important thing required to achieve that objective is to learn how to express breast milk, store it and train your child to take those milk at a specified time.

Working moms need to learn how to keep expressed breast milk (EBM)

There are a few things you need to learn before stepping yourself out to work. The most important step is to learn how to express breast milk at least 2 weeks before going to work. The recommended duration is at least for 15 to 20 minutes. 

  • Wash your hand prior to the procedure, milk your breast gently towards the nipple or use a warm towel instead to ensure a good milk flow. 
  • Put your thumb on the upper border of your areola. Other fingers should support the bottom of your breast specifically at the lower border of your areola.
  • Pinch on the areola using all of the fingers at the same time.
  • Rotate your finger and ensure you milk from all directions
  • Repeat the same steps for the other breast

Preparing your child for the EBM routine for working moms

In order for your child to be able to adapt with their upcoming feeding routine, it is recommended for you to train them for at least 2 weeks prior to your working period. The training can be divided into 4 phases which comprise of:

  • 1st to 3rd day
  • 4th to 6th day
  • 7th to 9th day
  • 10th to 13th day

During the 1st til the 3rd day, EBM can be given during breakfast (7.00 – 9.00 am). The rest could be supplemented by breastfeeding. The 4th to 6th day would require the child to be fed with EBM during breakfast and morning tea (10.00 – 11.30 am). The rest as usual, will be supplemented by breastfeeding.

The 7th til the 9th day period would include all of the components from the second phase (gives EBM during breakfast and morning tea) plus during lunch (12.00 – 1.30 pm). Finally, during 10th to 13th days, EBM can be given during breakfast, morning tea, lunch and evening tea (2.00 – 4.00 pm). Breastfeeding can be given at night by working moms.

There are a few things that you need to take into account while preparing EBM for your child:

  • Ensure the EBM is warm before it’s being given to the baby
  • If the EBM was frozen, put it in the refrigerator (the non-freezing part) for 6 to 8 hours 
  • After the milking procedure, the bottle needs to be soaked in warm water
  • Don’t use a microwave or kitchen to reheat or thaw EBM
  • Test the temperature of EBM on your wrist
  • EBM that has been taken from a freezer needs to be given to a baby within 1 hour. The milk can’t be refrozen after

The key to this routine is time management. Working moms need to know when is the right time to pump their breast at work, prepare EBM and feed it to their children. 

If your child is being taken care of by a nanny, they have to know how to prepare EBM prior to the feeding time. If there is any doubt, ask your doctor now.
